The Office of the Traffic Commissioner has released the most recent figures, up to the end of 2023, detailing the average wait time for an Operator’s Licence application to be decided.
Where there is no Public Inquiry, the average time for a Goods Vehicle Operator’s Licence Application for the end of 2023 was 31 working days and a PSV Operator’s Licence Application this was 36 working days. Where a Public Inquiry is required this increases to 147 days and 134 days respectively. The previous figures can be viewed here.
What can you do to ensure that the application will run smoothly and give the best chance of a quick decision?
- View the demonstration video on the gov.uk website;
- Ensure that all licence history is fully declared, including previous applications even where this was withdrawn or refused;
- Include sufficient information about where the vehicles will be parked;
- Outline clearly how the Transport Manager will fulfil their duties, particularly if this is a part time role;
- Check the guidance on the required financial evidence and ensure that a full bank statement in the correct name is submitted, with explanations for any large sums deposited or paid out;
- If you have been trading before the application, you are likely to be asked how you have met your transport requirements previously, be prepared to demonstrate with invoices or evidence of light goods vehicles being available to the business;
- Ensure that the Transport Manager has sat a Refresher Course within the past 3 years;
- If the application is a variation application – instruct an auditor to check your compliance before making the application. The application could trigger a DVSA visit, make sure you have addressed any shortcomings before this happens.
