About Laura Newton CMILT

Laura is a registered solicitor practising in England and Wales, having qualified in 2010. Prior to this, Laura worked for Border Force and as a Magistrates’ Court Legal Adviser. Her practice covers European and UK Road Transport law and criminal defence work involving transport-related allegations both in the Crown Court and Magistrates’ Court.

Before joining SBC, Laura worked in Private Practice as motoring and transport solicitor.

Laura is a specialist in dealing with European and Domestic Road Transport Regulatory Law. She represents HGV and PSV Operators and Drivers at Traffic Commissioners’ Public Inquiries and Conduct Hearings.

UK Road Transport Law

All aspects of Road Transport Law including Operator Licenses, European and Domestic regulations, criminal charges, vehicle seizure and restoration and UK Border Agency-imposed Civil Penalties for the carriage of Clandestine Entrants (illegal immigrants).

This matter involved a successful appeal against the Traffic Commissioner’s decision to impose a disqualification

DVSA v Rowe [2017] EWHC 608 (Admin)

A successful defence in the High Court involving the niche exemptions relating to a Showman’s vehicle and the requirements to hold an Operator’s Licence and record driving on a tachograph.

 

Criminal defence

Laura regularly appears in the Magistrates Court on behalf of Operators and drivers charged with serious criminal offences. She is very experienced and highly recommended for her motoring defence practice including acting for drivers with exceptional hardship cases, Special Reasons, Drink Driving.

 

Private Hire Driver Licencing

Laura has an extensive practice acting for Private Hire Drivers, in appeals and during investigations by Licencing Authorities. She is instructed regularly by the UK’s largest Union in respect of appeals, in particular those regulated by Transport for London.

 

MOT Disciplinary

We have an expertise in representing MOT Authorised Examiner and Testers during regulatory proceedings, in particular Contemplated Decisions and Appeals against Cessation. She regularly appears before the MOT Appeals Panel. Along with Barrister Simon Clarke, Laura has acted for clients in bringing Judicial Review Claims against DVSA regarding the procedural irregularities of decision making within the Agency.
